What it means

The backend is the part of a software system that runs on servers and is not directly visible to users, handling data storage, business logic, security checks and connections to other systems. In AI applications, the backend usually manages calls to the AI model, retrieval of documents and logging.

Real-world example

When a caseworker asks the internal AI assistant a question, the frontend only displays the chat. The backend checks the caseworker's permissions, retrieves relevant policy documents, sends them with the question to the model, filters the response and stores a log entry for auditing.

Why it matters for AI adoption

Most of the decisions that determine whether an AI system is safe, accurate and compliant are made in the backend, not in the visible interface. A polished demo can hide a backend that lacks access controls, logging or error handling.

Questions to ask

  • What happens in the backend between a user's request and the AI's response?
  • Where are permissions checked, and what is logged?
